Root Growth Dynamics and Structure in Seedlings of Four Shade Tolerant Mediterranean Species Grown under Moderate and Low Light

چکیده

Specific functional traits such as shade tolerance or leaf habits can enhance root growth dynamics and structure of planted seedlings in the understory forests. We assessed how low moderate light levels (17 33% full sunlight, mimicking after-thinning stocking) affect four late successional trees, three deciduous (Acer monspessulanum L., Quercus pyrenaica Willd Sorbus torminalis (L.) Crantz) one evergreen (Quercus ilex L.) species. Rooting depth, were mainly explained by species differences. Roots trees elongated faster deeper larger than roots Q. ilex. Among S. had lowest growth. area nutrient concentration positively related to growth, highlighting importance plant economic spectrum, determinants Moderate level slightly enhanced decreased specific (SLA). Species differences water potential under drought rooting evidencing its role overcoming stress during seedling establishment. These findings guide selection successional, tolerant tree for underplanting thinned Mediterranean plantations provide insights into their ecology.

Photosynthesis and Biomass Allocation in Oak Seedlings Grown under Shade

Northern’ red oak (Quercus rubra L.) (NRO) and white oak (0. alba L.) (WO) acorns were sown into wooden plots and grown under 30 percent shade screen (30 percent S) or 70 percent shade screen (70 percent S). Seedlings grown under full sun were the controls (C). At the end of the first year, the 30 percent S NRO had 30 percent greater seedling dry weight (DW) than C seedlings. No growth differen...

Performance of Seedlings of a Shade-Tolerant Tropical Tree Species after Moderate Addition of N and P

Nitrogen deposition to tropical forests is predicted to increase in future in many regions due to agricultural intensification. We conducted a seedling transplantation experiment in a tropical premontane forest in Ecuador with a locally abundant late-successional tree species (Pouteria torta, Sapotaceae) aimed at detecting species-specific responses to moderate N and P addition and to understan...

Root-shoot interaction in the greening of wheat seedlings grown under red light.

Wheat seedlings grown with roots exposed to constant red light (300-500 micromoles m-2 s-1) did not accumulate chlorophyll in the leaves. In contrast, seedlings grown with their roots shielded from light accumulated chlorophylls. Chlorophyll biosynthesis could be induced in red-light-grown chlorophyll-deficient yellow plants by either reducing the red-light intensity at the root surface to 100 ...

Chlorophyll a: b Ratio Increases Under Low-light in ‘Shade-tolerant’ Euglena gracilis

Shade tolerance is a key adaptive strategy displayed by heliophytic photosynthetic organisms in response to limited light. Although generalized morphological and physiological traits associated with shade tolerance exist, the interest in shade tolerance has been expanding over the past few years due primarily to the controversies that have emerged on classical hypotheses of shade tolerance. In ...
